On Sunday afternoon, President Joe Biden released a heartfelt statement to the family of Corey Comperatore.
Comperatore, 50, a former fire chief from Pennsylvania, was tragically struck and killed by a bullet during the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. According to his family, Comperatore was bravely shielding his wife and daughter when he was hit.
Biden expressed his condolences to Comperatore’s loved ones on X/Twitter, saying, “Jill and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed at Donald Trump’s rally. He was a father protecting his family from the bullets being fired. We are also praying for the full recovery of those who were injured.”
Comperatore was the only bystander who lost his life in the tragic event. Timothy Matthew Crooks, the shooter responsible for the attack, was killed by law enforcement after opening fire.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Comperatore’s sister wrote, “The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most. He was a hero that shielded his daughters. His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable and unimaginable. My baby brother just turned 50 and had so much life left to experience. Hatred has no limits and love has no bounds. Pray for my sister-in-law, nieces, my mother, sister, me, and his nieces and nephews as this feels like a terrible nightmare but we know it is our painful reality.”
Despite being struck in the right ear, Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, was not seriously injured and confirmed he will attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee as scheduled.
